The sleeve is thickest at the plug and tapers away, so the stiffness falls off gradually instead of stopping dead. It clips on without dismantling anything, and comes in two sizes for cable between 6 and 12 mm. TPU is used because it stays soft well below zero. Harder plastic cracks in frost at exactly the point where the cable sits still.
The thinking comes from the job: when a cable fails in the same place every time, the route is wrong, not the cable. The fault that disappears when you straighten a cable is a conductor fatigued from being bent too tight too many times. A jacket worn through at the same spot every trip means the cable route is wrong, not that the cable is bad. Both are geometry rather than material, and a restrictor is the cheapest way to fix geometry. In use on my own boat through a season.
